Inspirations From Chinese New Year
I’m a Chinese and Chinese New Year is few more days later. I got an inspiration from Chinese New Year and would like to share with everyone.
Do anyone here heard of the word “Ang Pau”? Ang Pau is a chinese tradition during the Chinese new year. People who are married will use a ready made “small red paper envelope” to put in some dollars and give it to relatives / friends who are not married. Obviously, I’m not married yet and I will be the Ang Pau “harvester” (Receiver).
Base on the past, I expect I’ll receive $200 this year. This is something that only Chinese will have so some people might not have heard about it. But what so special about it?
I love money. So I did a calculation and I’m shocked when I saw this:
“If I invest all my Ang Pau money into equity unit trust (12% estimated), guess how much will I get when I’m 25 years old?
$3600? $5000?
It’s a total of $29,866.79.
When a Chinese graduate from university, he is capable to pay for a cheap house’s deposit and buy his first house. He might rent out some of the rooms and stay in it. Before he starts his first job, he already has his own house and small amount of passive income. He don’t need to worry about his future in-laws will stop him from marry their daughter.
Is that cool for a Chinese?
No. It’s not. The coolest thing is the magic of compound interest.
It’s not a privilege for Chinese only. You can start encouraging your kids to start saving $200 per year. By doing that, he is trained to save money, manage his budget, financially independent and buy his own house.
If you are worrying your own children’s future in money, let him or her start from young and you’ll see the magic of compound knowledge and habit too.

HI Alex,
Cool calculation. very chinese indeed!!
Hi Alex,
I really enjoyed your post about young chinese person’s ability to
save and plan for their future… I wish I could convince some young
people of the wisdom of saving instead of getting into credit card
debt, but they would probably not listen…
Thank you for your post on my website a few days ago and I apologize
for being late!
